I was born and raised in the Acre, in Lowell, Massachusetts. After high school I moved to Colorado, where I lived for 7 years before returning home to Lowell. My writing then was all about work: insurance forms, standard letters. I never thought about writing fiction. I began taking my first college courses at UMass Lowell when I was 35, and earned a Bachelor’s degree in English. There I learned about words. Sociology, Psychology, English. The richness of words was amazing. At UMass Lowell I was so fortunate to take a writing class with Andre Dubus III, the first Jack Kerouac Writer in Residence. Taking that class set me on my journey to becoming a writer.
I taught for 18 years, grades 3 through 8, as well as teachers. Teaching writing, sharing the joy that comes with writing, and seeing students become excited about putting words together have been incredibly rewarding. Now I am fortunate enough to pursue my deepest passion.
